The International Outreach Program has a partnership with Georgetown Public Hospital and the Doobay Medical Clinic. We are focused on capacity building in the area of chronic kidney disease management through the provision of a training program in nephrology.
Prevalence of renal disease is very high in Guyana. Currently, there is not a single nephrologist working in the country. For those with end stage renal disease, dialysis is their only option. Most cannot afford the treatment. Without dialysis, patients die.
Our partnership involves Canada’s McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences and Guyana’s Georgetown Public Hospital and Doobay Medical Centre. We support the hospital and clinic so they can provide dialysis, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. A training program in Canada will train Guyana’s first nephrologist.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors:
- Material support is being provided to the dialysis units
- Of the 40 patients receiving dialysis, 32 are not being charged for the service
- First trainee in nephrology is in Canada currently
- Another two trainees are coming to Canada in 2015-2016
Your gift to the International Outreach Program of St. Joseph’s Health System provides life-saving medical training in Guyana and other areas of the world where medical resources are low. Please give generously now.
